BEACH USE

BEACH TAGS
Tags are issued to all residents by Block Captains prior to the official opening of the beach. The beach is "officially" staffed from about June 15 until Labor Day. Your Block Captain will deliver the tags to you. If you are not home, he or she will leave you a note to arrange pick up. Block Captains will not leave beach tags in your mailbox. You must receive them and sign for them personally.
The tags MUST be taken to the beach in order to gain access. Please remember to bring them with you and show them to the Beach Checker. Only if we all follow the rules, will the checking of beach tags help keep trespassers away.

BEACH COURTESY
Please help keep our beach a fun and safe place.
Please listen to the lifeguards, if they say to come in from the water, please do so.
Please show your beach tag to the Beach Checker when asked to.
Please report any trespassers to the Beach Checker; do not take matters into your own hands (or call: 431-6650).
Please pick up your garbage and place in the trash bins.
Please try not to use glass at the beach; most drinks come in plastic containers.
Please try not to play your music so loudly as to disturb others in the area.
Please try to be considerate of those who are trying to get away from it all. We suggest that they move out of the center highly populated areas so they can have some "quiet".
Please do not disturb the roped off sections (Piping Plover Nest Areas, these birds are an endangered species).
Please do not allow children to play in the dunes. There are ticks, poison ivy, and people may do damage to the dunes.
OUR BEACH IS A TREASURE; LET'S KEEP IT THAT WAY!

OUR DUNES

Our dunes are the most unique feature of our neighborhood. The dunes in our Park District (Allevard Street to Prescott Street) are "original." They have never been built on and they are as old as our island.
The Dunes are our first and best protection against ocean storms. They have been eroded in the past during Nor'easters and Hurricanes, but they have subsequently been rebuilt, with the help of fencing and vegetation. We cannot afford to "buy" such protection for our homes.
The dunes are held together by a network of root systems of the many grasses, shrubs and trees growing on them. If the vegetation is destroyed, the dune will literally blow away. It has happened before. Walking on the dunes kills the new grasses. Destruction or damaging the trees is equally as dangerous.
Our dunes are protected by 2 important laws: the New York State Coastal Erosion Hazard Law and the Dune Protection Law. The Town of Hempstead Ordinances # 167 and # 170 provide dual enforcement. Willful destruction of vegetation or dunes is punishable by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation with fines up to $10,000. These fines have been levied against individuals on Long Island. The Town levies significant fines for violation of either ordinance as well. Please call the Bay Constable at 432-9100, immediately to report any wrong doing, or inform one of our Board Members.

PLEASE DO NOT CUT DOWN OR ALTER ANY TREES OR VEGETATION ON THE DUNES THAT MAY OBSTRUCT YOUR "VIEW". PAST VIOLATORS HAVE BEEN FINED!

Children and dogs playing on the dunes are particularly hazardous to the nesting birds. Various plovers and terns are endangered species and are establishing nesting colonies. Dogs can destroy these. Also, there are poison ivy strands throughout the dunes. Ticks are also known to live there as well. Please keep your children and dogs safe by not allowing them to play in the dunes.

PLEASE ENJOY OUR DUNES & DO YOUR BEST TO PROTECT THEM!
